Vietnam & Cambodia: 2-week itinerary

I've dreamed about this trip for years, and finally, in the summer of 2023, I had the chance to explore these two incredible countries: Vietnam and Cambodia.

Here, you won’t find the typical first-time Vietnam itinerary. Instead, we blended in off-the-beaten-path spots and few beach days, even though it was the rainy season (August).

Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon, is a vibrant and lively destination that never sleeps. It’s a place where modern skyscrapers stand side by side with charming old buildings, and the streets buzz with motorbikes, delicious street food, and endless energy. Whether you’re into sightseeing, eating, or just wandering around, Ho Chi Minh City has a little bit of everything for everyone!

We arrived late at night but we immediately wanted to try some traditional food.

We dediced to try Pho Quỳnh, a cozy gem where you can dive into authentic Vietnamese flavors right in the heart of the city. Known for its steaming bowls of pho, this spot serves up rich, aromatic broths packed with fresh herbs, tender beef slices, and all the classic fixings.

Day 2: Con Dao

In the early morning we came back to the airport to catch a 50 min flight to Côn Đảo Island.

Côn Đảo, a hidden gem off Vietnam’s southern coast, is a stunning archipelago that feels like a paradise lost in time. Far from the typical tourist trail, its crystal-clear waters, lush jungles, and pristine beaches offer a rare sense of serenity. Côn Đảo is a place untouched by mass tourism and full of authentic, unspoiled beauty.

To go around the island I suggest you to rent a motorbike.

You can enjoy some beach time at Bãi Tắm An Hải, a peaceful beach on Con Son Island with soft white sand, clear waters, and stunning views—perfect for a quiet, relaxing escape. Here you will also find different restaurants and beach clubs, were you can eat fresh food and use the beach facilities for free.

Nearby, you will find Bãi Nhát, a scenic spot known for its stunning coastal views, rocky shoreline and dramatic sunsets. It’s an ideal place for sightseeing, photography, and enjoying the natural beauty of the island.

Here you can also discover the island’s past at the Con Dao Prison, known as the “Hell on Earth,” and pay respects at Hang Duong Cemetery, where many Vietnamese revolutionaries are buried.

Wander through Con Son Town, visit local markets and try this amazing restaurant: Beh Chay Madame Ha, a delightful vegetarian restaurant, offering a serene atmosphere and a menu full of flavorful, fresh ingredients and creative takes on traditional recipes. It’s the perfect spot for a healthy and delicious meal on the island.

Stroll through colorful stalls selling grilled squid, fresh oysters, tropical fruits, and traditional Vietnamese snacks. • Dinh Cậu Shrine sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, near Dương Đông. Dedicated to the goddess of the sea, it’s a popular spot for fishermen seeking blessings before setting sail. The shrine’s picturesque location also makes it a great place to catch the sunset.

Both sites are not just places of worship but also offer a serene atmosphere and beautiful views, making them must-visit spots for anyone exploring the island cultural side.

Enjoy a fresh juice or a coffee at On the rocks at Mango Bay Resort, a charming beachfront restaurant and bar known for its relaxed vibe, stunning ocean views, and fresh, flavorful cuisine. Perched on rocky shores with a rustic, open-air design, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal, sip on tropical cocktails, and watch the sunset over the Gulf of Thailand.

Bãi Khem Beach, is a stunning crescent-shaped beach on the southern coast of the island. Renowned for its powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and lush green surroundings. To reach the top, tackle the 400-step climb, and be rewarded with sweeping views of dramatic karst landscapes, lush rice paddies, and the winding Tam Coc river. The site also boasts ancient temples and a serene cave, adding a touch of cultural and historical charm.

Bich Dong Pagoda, one of the most famous sites in the area, is a beautiful and peaceful spot to visit. Nestled in the scenic hills, this ancient pagoda complex consists of three levels, each offering lovely views of the surrounding landscape and interesting architecture.

Visit Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, the historic site of Vietnam’s first capital, featuring ancient temples and relics from the Dinh and Le dynasties.

Another must to visit (also my favorite) is the Bái Đính Temple Complex, a vast and significant Buddhist site. It is known for its grand scale, featuring several key structures, including:

  • The Đại Hùng Temple: home to the largest bronze Buddha statue in Vietnam

The soft glow of the lights reflects off the river and the karst landscapes, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for a peaceful evening stroll or capturing stunning pictures.

Day 14-15: Halong Bay

To end the trip, we decided to have a two days - one night cruise in Halong Bay with Scarlet Pearl Cruises, which I highly recommend. They offer a luxurious experience with elegant cabins, fine dining, and a range of activities like kayaking and exploring islands. Committed to environmental responsibility, the cruise always respects nature and actively works to remove plastic from the sea, ensuring a sustainable and breathtaking way to enjoy Halong Bay’s stunning beauty.

Halong Bay, located in northern Vietnam, is famous for its stunning scenery of emerald waters and towering limestone islands. The name "Halong" means "Descending Dragon" in Vietnamese, which reflects a local legend about a dragon that descended from the sky and created the bay’s unique landscape with its tail. This beautiful bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Vietnam.

The activities on the cruise will be:

  • Relax: unwind on the sun deck, taking a dip in the onboard jacuzzi

Day 17: Hanoi

In your last day in Hanoi, I suggest you to visit Quang Phu Cau, a picturesque village, well-known for its traditional craftsmanship of making incense sticks. Located in the Ha Nam province, this village offers a glimpse into a unique aspect of Vietnamese culture and craftsmanship. You will be able to see artisans at work, learn about the traditional methods of incense-making, and purchase handcrafted incense sticks. The village is a peaceful spot, providing a cultural experience and a chance to support local artisans.

You can get there by catching a bus in Hanoi, it will take you around 1 hour but it's absolutely worth it!

I had been dreaming of visiting Vietnam and Cambodia for a long time, and this trip turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. The journey surpassed my expectations, filled with unforgettable moments and deep connections that made it truly special. I hope my experience will inspire others to visit these countries. It was truly one of the best trips of my life, and I believe others will find the same magic and wonder that I did.
