Satén tea house, Tokyo

If you know me, you will know that I am a crazy lover of matcha, almost obsessed. Recently, this valuable Japanese tea have become a trend all over the world especially used in drinks like matcha latte or in desserts. As I lived for several months in Japan I’ve been able to try many delicacies based on matcha, including salty dishes such as matcha ramen. Despite this, the classic matcha prepared during the Japanese tea ceremony remains my favorite. It is simply made of hot water and matcha (powdered tea) but as I always say, simple things are usually the best. In Japan, when I want to treat myself with this hot drink, I go to traditional tea houses where matcha is always served with a wagashi (traditional Japanese dessert).

This time, however, I decided to go to a more contemporary tea house, called Satén. It is located in the district of Suginami, far from the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo. In front of the entrance is located a large black table full of tea utensils. The wooden interiors give the idea of a warm and cosy place. I was greeted with a smile and the waiter kindly indicated me the menu in front of the cashier. There is a wide variety of drinks, based on matcha and not only, and a small assortment of delicious-looking desserts. I choose a short matcha and their famous matcha pudding. I decided to sit at the counter to see the girl preparing matcha. After few minutes, here is my matcha served in an espresso cup, an original idea that I really appreciated.

The pudding is probably the best matcha dessert I've ever tried, and I've tried it a lot! It has a very creamy consistency and the taste of matcha is strong, as I like. The short matcha, due to the masterly preparation and the choice of a high-quality product used, is simply delicious. I left this place with a smile and with a great desire to come back. If you are around Tokyo and you want to try the authentic matcha, this is the right place. Even though it is located outside Tokyo, you can take advantage and visit the Inokashira Park (Kichijoji) which is just a few minutes' walk from the tea house.
